I'm taking Vonnegut to heart: every sentence advances the action or reveals the character. It means there is no "backing into" some element in an elegant and wrongheaded way. I'm not Proust and my words themselves are of no interest to the reader. The story matters. The character matters. My language exists only to enhance one or the other of story and character.

It can be a bear to have to drive the story forward in a clean, concise, and effective manner. All my lazy and imprecise crutches are thrown to the wayside. jack wellinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06666545887771905191noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4671719323266887561.post-88072462233130461722013-03-01T13:12:36.612-05:002013-03-01T13:12:36.612-05:00Hey Jack,

You sound nearly in knots over this dilemma. Maybe you need a break from that story. Knowing you, you've got a stack of manuscripts to dig into. Work on something else until your brain decides to play nice. Otherwise, post away. I'd love to read more of your work. :) Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14326522346206157210noreply@blogger.com
